Presentation

Macha Makeïeff is an artist of many talents. Together with Jérôme Deschamps, she created a series of delightfully eccentric productions from the 1970s onward, including Lapin-Chasseur and Salle des Fêtes. A visual artist and costume designer, she developed the distinctive aesthetic of Les Deschiens, which left a lasting mark on an entire generation. She went on to direct the Théâtre national de la Criée in Marseille, stage numerous classical works—including Trissotin ou Les Femmes savantes, Tartuffe Théorème and Dom Juan—and design costumes for many productions by Jean Bellorini. A magician of colour and a collector of extraordinary objects, Makeïeff transforms theatrical spaces, carving out alcoves, installing swinging doors and populating them with stuffed animals…

With Waiting Zone, she returns to one of her earliest passions: wordless burlesque comedy inspired by slapstick cinema, a genre built around visual gags and physical humour. Seven characters find themselves stranded in an ambiguous place: a waiting room, an administrative office, a complaints desk—who can say? They arrive carrying anxious desires, hidden secrets and festive costumes. An intruder appears. A threat begins to loom. Waiting Zone is a poetic comedy brought to life by a troupe of remarkable and highly skilled performers. If they sing and dance with frenzied energy, it is only moments before disaster strikes. Yet imagination and fantasy ultimately prevail in a final act of joyful defiance.
