“Believe that I am ill, you jade? Believe that I am ill, you impudent hussy?” Here’s a hypochondriac the likes of which we’ve never seen; an imaginary invalid with undiagnosed suffering and yet suffering nonetheless, even if only from his own anxieties. Jean Liermier offers an entirely fresh reading of this classic text, in which the invalid is either the mad person we’ve all worried that we are at one point or another, or the opposite, which is to say the invalid is finally truly taken seriously.
