The Crisis

There are razor-sharp lines that we’d like to learn by heart so that we can use them when things get out of hand. There are absurd situations which highlight the small adjustments to ethics that we are capable of on a daily basis, that we’d like to see a thousand times over so that we don’t fall into the trap again. But above all, there’s Coline Serreau’s writing and rhythm, her talent for sparing nothing of our hypocrisies, contradictions, or clumsiness. The remarkable film The Crisis – adapted for the stage by her son Samuel Tasinaje – tells the story of Victor, a legal adviser who loses his wife and his job on the same day, and who discovers around him both the debacle and the possibility of understanding (the mistakes of) his life. Because he wants to win back his love, Victor overturns his certainties and opens himself up to the world. A pure gem of humour, sensitivity, and truth, it took all the skill of director Jean Liermier, his attention to language and the calibre of his actors, to bring this highly topical tale of self-discovery to the stage. The dialogues roll over and expose the world’s stupidity, giving the play the tragi-comic force of poetry.
