PrEsentation

Everything is a matter of trust and desire. The staging of these two short plays by one of the nineteenth century’s most gifted dramatists, Anton Chekhov, has been entrusted to a promising young creative team, first for an open-air production and later in the theatre’s smaller auditorium.

Flavie Tapparel and Tibor Ockenfels bring boundless energy and enthusiasm to the challenge. The world has changed; romantic relationships and the ways they are expressed evolve at remarkable speed. What do these plays say to us today, when, in their own time, they disrupted the conventions of Russian theatre by blending comedy of manners with social critique?

Beneath the veneer of romantic comedy, The Marriage Proposal and The Bear are playful theatre works whose madness steadily escalates. In both, couples clash with one another in much the same way they love. But is that really love? Their concerns are material, their emotions fickle, their outlooks self-centred. These hypocrites, hotheads and naïve dreamers feel strangely familiar, like distant cousins arriving unexpectedly for a visit. There is little doubt that, across time, their misadventures still resonate with us today, and that the finely tuned mechanics of their dialogue continue to generate immense pleasure. With the hope that, despite all misunderstandings, love may ultimately prevail.
