Presentation

Swiss director Robert Sandoz is a familiar presence at the Théâtre de Carouge, where he has won audiences over with productions of Feydeau, Anouilh, Ramuz and his adaptation of The Rules of the Game by Jean Renoir.

Written in the wake of the scandal surrounding Tartuffe, the play centres on a deeply enigmatic protagonist: a compulsive seducer, iconoclastic atheist and detached observer of a society he despises. Dom Juan flees his pursuers as though trying to escape himself. Opposite him stands his servant Sganarelle, whom he both torments and values—a man full of common sense and humanity, yet entirely lacking in courage. Shifting constantly between comedy and tragedy, Dom Juan is a work of countless facets. Robert Sandoz seeks to widen the focus beyond the central duo and experiment with a more choral form, embracing the presence of a small collective swept along by the whirlwind of events. In doing so, he highlights the destructive consequences of cowardice when confronted with unchecked individualism. If Dom Juan appears as the modern man who frees us from religion, he is also the first cynic, whose contemporary descendants inspire a chilling sense of dread.

Because the story is one of love, wounded honour and revenge, the action is transposed to a vibrant Mexican Day of the Dead setting, whose rich colours and imagery provide the perfect backdrop for the fatal conclusion that restores—at least on the stage—the order of things and the justice of Heaven.
