About us
Since 1958, the Théâtre de Carouge has been a centre for theatrical creation at the heart of the French-speaking Swiss theatre scene. Having moved in November 2021 to a new venue designed by the architects at Pont12, the theatre now boasts two auditoriums (seating 468 and 135), creative workshops and a rehearsal room.
Under the artistic direction of Jean Liermier since 2008, the Théâtre de Carouge has pursued a clear artistic vision: to breathe new life into the great works of the repertoire by reinterpreting them through a contemporary and poetic lens. More than just a venue for performances, it is an invitation to dream together of a better world, through words that raise awareness and enrich the mind.
In January 2027, Jean Bellorini will succeed Jean Liermier as artistic director of the Théâtre de Carouge. The Théâtre de Carouge’s Board of Trustees has unanimously appointed Jean Bellorini as his successor, impressed by his artistic talent, his managerial experience within major theatre institutions, his interpersonal skills with staff, and his constant focus on both the profession and the audience.
As Jean Bellorini will not be able to take up his post in Carouge until 1 January 2027, the Board of Trustees would like to extend its warmest thanks to Jean Liermier for agreeing to remain in charge until 31 December 2026. The 2026–2027 season will therefore serve as a transitional period between the two directors.
the building
The result of a long process that began in 2008, the new Carouge Theatre was designed by the Lausanne-based firm Pont12 architectes, which was unanimously selected in an international competition in 2011. Following the approval of the construction budget by the Municipal Council and its confirmation by a public referendum in 2017, work began in 2018, culminating in the inauguration of the new theatre on 5 November 2021.
